STORMS BRING OUT THE SCAMS, TOO

May 24, 2011
By: Bob Morrison

VERSION 1:

May flowers continue to bring showers & severe storms -- and after-storm scam artists. Most common, the roofing scam. And one of the best pieces of advice – get a good referral:

STORMSCAMII1.wav :09 “...association for a reference.”

STORMSCAMII1.mp3 :09 “...association for a reference.”

Tommy Vieth (Veeth) is a roofing company owner in North Texas who says homeowners must be on the lookout for “fly by night” roofing contractors who may come in requiring that you pay half the money upfront. Don't do it! Also make sure they have liability insurance, and verify it with the insurance company.

OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL COPY: Vieth says most insurance companies have preferred roofing contractors. And most areas have an association, like the North Texas Roofing Contractors' Association. They can give a reliable referral. Also look for their web sites. Vieth says the Better Business Bureau may not be as thorough in checking out the background of a company as the local associations and the insurance companies.

VERSION 2:

Severe storm activity often brings roof damage, which all too often also brings “fly by night” roofing scam artists, to a neighborhood near you:

STORMSCAMII2.wav :10 “...100% of homeowner's deductible.”

STORMSCAMII2.mp3 :10 “...100% of homeowner's deductible.”

That's Tommy Vieth (Veeth) -- a North Texas roofing company owner – who adds: the practice of covering the homeowner's deductible is illegal in Texas. He also says one of the best pieces of advice is – get a good referral. He says most insurance companies have lists of preferred roofing contractors. Also, in most areas you can get reliable referrals from an association, like the North Texas Roofing Contractors' Association. You can also look for their web sites, but beware using the Internet to find a roofer. Unless you're using a trusted site, of course, like Angie's List.

OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL COPY: Vieth say homeowners should also make sure they have liability insurance, and verify it with the insurance company. Vieth doesn't trust the Better Business Bureau to be diligent enough about checking the background of a company – not as well as the local associations and the insurance companies will do.
